april β€“ readathon tbr: owls #3 + read a little romance

books read: 35

i had been waiting for owls year 3  (apr 1-30) ever since i was done with newts in august last year. since g @bookroast, the host and creator, added more careers this time round, i’m going for one of the newest ones available. after i was done with my first career, spell maker, i attempted to do my owls for another career that i had my eyes on which was graphic designer. additionally, i completed animagus training and merpeople linguistic in the courses, seminars and training section. for read a little romance (apr 6-may 4), i completed everything. the prompts encouraged me to read more diversely, and i managed to check off some books off my tbr shelves.

some backlisted books that i read during these two readathon were truthwitch by susan dennard, across the universe by beth revis, a great and terrible beauty by libba bray and the gathering by kelley armstrong. my favourite books was probably the bride test by helen hoang, simon vs. the homo sapiens agenda by becky albertalli and the entire ravenels historical romance series by lisa kleypas. in april, i finished the goddess test series by aimee carter. the book that surprised me the most, and shook me up the most, was the raven king by nora sakavic.

may β€“ readathon tbr: asian readathon + bookemon

books read: 52

are you surprised by the sheer number of books i’ve read in may? i thought i was seeing things for a moment. upon reflection, there’s a couple of things that prompted me to read this much. firstly, my country’s on circuit breaker (quarantine) right now so i’m spending every single moment at home (& on my bed). secondly, i’m one of the many recent graduates so i’m jobless and have a lot of time on my hands. lastly, in celebration of asian heritage month, i wanted to read as many books that has asian representation or written by asian authors as i can. basically, i have a lot of time and have nothing else to do other than read.

during the month of may, i’ve read lots of exciting and interesting books. to start off, i’ve been a huge fan of the violet evergarden netflix adaptation ever since it came out so i decided to read the light novel which i wholeheartedly fell in love with. (p.s. i’m waiting for the latest light novel to be translated into english and i’m desperate for it. never have i ever wanted to be able to read japanese in my whole life until now). next, rin chupeco’s the bone witch surprised me. the characters and the plot were so fascinating and entertaining. i thought i was done with the truly devious series with the hand on the wall but the author announced that there’ll be a 4th book!!! FANTASTIC NEWS!!

unfortunately, there were some disappointments that includes the mermaid, the witch and the sea by maggie tokuda-hall and my favorite souvenir by penelope ward & vi keeland. for the former, the romance between the main characters were abrupt and didn’t feel authentic. plus, i was more interested in the side character’s point of view chapters than the main characters’. for the latter, the first part was interesting and kept me wanting to read more. however, the second part was a little draggy and i didn’t like how flip-floppy the female character was.

honestly, the sole book that staying up late reading worth it was the king’s men by nora sakavic which concludes the all for the game trilogy. this book requires trigger warnings which includes torture and sexual abuse. it was intense yet i couldn’t pull myself away from the plot. the characters, though chaotic and dysfunctional, were fascinating people to read about. the romance that i had been teased about and waiting for finally came to fruition in its own way. it. was. crazy.

for bookemon reads, i finished all the books except the calling by kelley armstrong and red rising by pierce brown.
