75 books in january and february 2021: mostly new releases and standalone | wrap up

hello everyone, it’s time for my first wrap up of the year. since i’m still on the hunt for a job, i’ve been keeping myself busy with reading and watching tv. that being said, i’ve read about 40 books in january and 35 books in february.

as for tv shows, my sci-fi/fantasy loving self is in heaven after starting wandavision and finishing up both seasons of the mandalorian. the production is insane. as someone who have never started star wars, i’m thoroughly intrigued by what’s going on in the mandalorian. annnnnd i can never expect the next step in wandavision.

january

meant to read in 2020 but didn’t: starting with the silence of bones by june hur, i couldn’t stop thinking about it. june hur swiftly became one of my favorite authors with just her debut novel. after what happened in book one, the damned by renée ahdieh rose up in my tbr list. though i was a little disappointed with how the plot went, the author’s writing and the characters superseded that component.

read 9 (nine) 2021 releases: fell in love with clues to the universe by christina li and one of the good ones by maika moulite and maritza moulite was amazing. lore by alexandra bracken has an interesting twist of the greek mythology. for romances, the knockout by sajni patel, happily ever afters by elise bryant, a groom of her own by christi caldwell, the invitation by vi keeland and not my match by ilsa madden-mills were great reads. unfortunately, a vow so bold and deadly by brigid kemmerer was a little disappointing. i found myself not supporting and cheering for the characters as much as i did in the past two books.

beginning 4 series: one goal of mine is to read as many backlisted books as i can. this january, i started passenger by alexandra bracken, to all the boys i’ve loved before by jenny han and anna dressed in blood by kendare blake. the city we became by n.k. jemisin and a deal with the elf king by elise kova recently appeared on my radar but i really enjoyed both. also, i reread the gilded wolves by roshani chokshi in preparation for the silvered serpents and the bronzed beasts.

finishing up 2 series: their fractured light by amie kaufman and meagan spooner was an epic conclusion to this space opera trilogy. though i liked sofia and gideon, i wasn’t as involved with their relationship as much as i did with tarver and lilac’s. with a vow so bold and deadly by brigid kemmerer, i was a little disappointed. many aspects of the book felt weirdly developed especially with the character growth rhen was supposed to have. accompanied with that is my nonchalance about the romances.

dnf: i’m sorry but i couldn’t finish reading the siren by kiera cass. stopped 50% into the story. the characters fell flat, the romance wasn’t very interesting and i got bored. attempt two will be during march.

february

thrived in february by reading 15 (FIFTEEN) 2021 releases!!! most of them are standalone rather than series which i’m pretty surprised about because i’m more of a series kind of reader.

starting 5 series: amari and the night brothers by b.b. alston was amazing~~~~ the magical system and the different departments in the bureau of supernatural investigations are so fascinating. i can’t wait for book two already. another is the bad beginning by lemony snicket which i’m not sure if i’ll continue unless prompted to. a historical romance that i started was a lady’s formula for love by elizabeth everett. loved that the main character started a sanctuary for female scientists during the victorian era. an ember in the ashes by sabaa tahir took me on a rollercoaster ride. the impressive world-building, multi-layered characters and the complicated setting completely destroyed me. mystery novel, the inheritance games by jennifer lynn barnes, was freaking fun. lastly, i read a dark and hollow star by ashley shuttleworth that has a complex faerie system with queer characters.

finishing 5 series: finally read sweet temptation by wendy higgins which narrated all the happenings in kaidan’s point of view. one of the book that i meant to read in 2020 but didn’t was my calamity jane by cynthia hand, brodi ashton and jodi meadows which was hilarious with an interesting setting. now that i’ve read that, i’m done with the lady janies series and am looking forward to the mary trio these authors are going to write. the slow burning romance, the push-and-pull, the yearning between zafira and nasir WAS PAINFUL in we free the stars by hafsah faizal. while they are trying to save magic and their world, these main characters are struggling with their feelings. the first half of shades of earth by beth revis exasperated me so much that i almost wanted to stop reading. while the concept is great, i think the execution was a little lacking. completed another duology with all the tides of fate by adalyn grace which wrapped things up nicely in terms of amora’s curse and the characters’ development.

special mention: the spanish love deception by elena armas was romantic and steamy. the book ticked off all my favorite tropes: enemies-to-lovers, unrequited love, fake dating, grumpy/sunshine. aaron blackwood is bae and catalina martín is an intelligent, beautiful woman.
