disclaimer: this review might consist spoilers for every single thing that happened throughout the entire shadowhunter chronicles.

you know there are some books that you read that you hold dear to your entire being. those books make your heart clench in happiness and joy and your stomach churn with fear and horror. you emerge from the end as if after a rollercoaster ride, with you satisfied from the adrenaline rush. queen of air and darkness was that for me. it sent me into a frenzy of emotions, uncaring of how i would end up. despite whatever emotional turmoil and crying that i did, i love the book with all my heart. although i was a little disappointed at how the problem was resolved because it felt a little superficial and convenient, i still enjoyed the book.

nothing went right for the characters. each of them were staring point blank at their own demons, struggling with their inner thoughts and still trying to grieve livvy’s death properly by themselves. the blackthorn family was falling apart at its seams and there was no way of putting them back together, not when they weren’t willing to communicate. now the children lost both their parents and livvy, and they lost the consistent and familiar care of julian. helen’s return to the family had been causing them stress as well, even though that had been what they desperately wanted from the start. helen was at a loss on how to handle the children, how to talk to them, how to get them to open up to her and accept that she was back in their lives after being gone for so long.

“It is a shame to see such a bright and beautiful star untimely extinguished.”

the romance was heartbreaking and bittersweet especially julian and emma’s. the relationship between mark, kieran and cristina was complex which they had to work through their feelings whilst trying not to be killed by whatever was thrown at them. the setting in faerie was a mixture of magical and terrifying. for long time shadowhunter readers, we know that nobody in faerie can be trusted so it was intense whenever they were there. it was pretty amazing discovering that some theories were proven right while others debunked.

even when something nice happens, the rare moment was destroyed very quickly and far more painful than i expected. the amount of doubts, fear and anxiety i had for the characters were pushing my boundaries, and it overwhelmed me. it was scary not knowing what the future held for them especially when cassandra clare has no qualms in eliminating anybody. as for side characters, i went ballistic thanks to horace dearborn and zara dearborn. these two are annoying as hell. the things that zara spewed out of her mouth was infuriating and i just want her to be gone.

“You can’t fix grief,” said Simon. “A rabbi told me that when my father died. The only thing that fixes grief is time, and the love of the people who care about you, and Tavvy has that.”

overall, i love each and everyone. all of them have their own parts to play with loads of growing up and maturing to do. the conclusion of the overarching conflict didn’t feel strong enough. however, i still enjoyed reading their journey.

below is the spoiler section which consists of mostly just my rambling and quotes from the book.

☽ spoiler section ☽

helen attempting to get to know the rest of the blackthorn siblings was pure sadness. even though they really wanted her back, it’s awkward and weird now that she’s actually home.

kit knowing how much ty needs familiar things around him when he wakes up from the shock of livvy’s death WHICH I STILL HAVEN’T RECOVERED FROM. but kit’s so pure. i love him.

omg. “The fey have their weaknesses, like all Downworlders. They were not created by God or by our Angel. They have flaws, and we have never exploited them, yet they exploit our mercy and laugh at us behind their hands.” OMG. HE’S FUCKED UP. just because you’re created by your Angel doesn’t mean you don’t have flaws you fucking instigating, disgusting little worm.

He needed the release of tears, she thought, but he’d forgotten the mechanisms of weeping after so many years of holding back.

^ ohh poor jules. why do you have to do this to yourself?

“You were very young when we lost Eleanor, your mother,” he said. “She told me once there is a clock in the hearts of parents. Most of the time it is silent, but you can hear it ticking when your child is not with you and you do not know where they are, or when they are awake in the night and wanting you. It will tick until you are with them again.”

mark told helen the truth about jules running the institute all this while and her showing her pride, and jules was like “it was like a tiny point of light, breaking through the darkness.” ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ i’m so proud of you too, julian.

“I’m here on my own account,” Magnus said, in a low and distant voice. “I need your help. There is absolutely no one else that I can ask.”
“You’re remembering someone.”
“Another night, a different boy with blue eyes.”

“What hurts more,” Magnus asked, “the love or the hate?”
“I don’t know,” Julian said. He dug his wet fingers into the carpet on either side of his knees. He felt as if he were having a hard time catching his breath. “I still love Emma more than I ever thought was possible. I love her more every day, and more every time I try to stop. I love her like I’m being ripped in half. And I want to cut the throats of everyone in the Cohort.”

oh jules. my heart breaks for you.

“Grief does not make us weak,” Cristina said firmly. “It makes us human. How could you comfort Dru, or Ty, or Jules, if you didn’t know what they missed about her? Sympathy is common. Knowing the exact shape of the hole someone’s loss leaves in your heart is rare.”

gwyn giving diana a white flower from the sky to help her with her grief is so sweet. 😍😍

the urge to punch zara dearborn after she said “good job not mentioning he was a traitor” was so bad. UGH, THIS GIRL NEEDS TO FREAKING GO.

that scene with julian and ty at the top of the pyre with liv’s body got me so emotional. i could feel my heart breaking. & holy shit. kit saw robert lightwood’s parabatai ghost during the burning of the pyre!!!!!!! i am shookthed.

“A clever man I knew once said that we cannot understand life, and therefore we cannot hope to understand death. I have lost many I loved to death, and it does not get easier, nor does watching the pyres burn.”

it’s so upsetting that the only way aline and helen could go back home was through the death of livvy and all the chaos that occurred.

“Faeries don’t like thanking people,” said Emma. “This is a romantic note.”
Cristina blushed. “It’s just the way faeries talk. It doesn’t mean anything.”
“When it comes to faeries,” Emma said darkly, “everything means something.”

^ tbh, i ship mark and cristina so much harder than her and kieran.

WTF. julian ASKED MAGNUS TO TAKE AWAY HIS EMOTIONS. NO WONDER HE’S ALWAYS BLANK NOW AND NOT FEELING ANYTHING. WTF, THIS IS FUCKING MESSED UP. magnus took away julian’s eros (romantic love) part of his emotions.

“I know I loved you,” he said. “But I can’t feel it.”

“You owe them nothing; you have cared for them and helped them and they know you as who you are. None of us owe every piece of our soul’s history to another.”

omg robert. why the fuck did you record your meeting with julian?! now the worst person in the freaking government knows the issue that they’ve been trying to discreetly solve!!!!!! and now emma and julian have to freaking kill annabel and get the black volume, ugh.

“Te adoro,” he whispered, and she giggled.
“Where did you learn that?”
“I looked it up,” he said, cupping the back of her neck, brushing kisses along her cheek, her jaw. “It’s true. I adore you, Cristina Mendoza Rosales, daughter of mountains and roses.”
“I adore you, too,” she whispered. “Even though your accent is terrible, I adore you, Mark Blackthorn, son of thorns.”

wtf, no one in the cohort tried to save samantha, but kieran, the downworlder princeling that you guys freaking hate dragged her out from that agonising pool. and all zara did was snarled at kieran. you fucking did nothing bitch. you just stood there and watch her suffer. fucking hell.

“Híjole!” Cristina shrieked, and pulled her T-shirt collar up over her face. “Put your pants on!”
“Sorry,” he called, ducking behind the door. “At least you’ve already seen it all.”
“Not in good lighting!”

“I don’t understand human attitudes toward beauty,” said the kelpie. “I like a fine sheen of seaweed on a woman.” –– well, i’d like to say that i don’t understand your standards.

“I did want to!” Mark exploded. “One thing you must understand – I did want to be with you in that way, and all ways, and that is not a lie.”

hahaha when diana wouldn’t succumb to horace dearborn’s blackmail, and sliced him with his own sword before she escaped. i loved it. she’s so badass.

~ this isn’t the end of the book but i got so lost in the book that i totally forgot to take notes. maybe when i reread it, i’ll update this post. ~
