11 May and June 2021 releases added to TBR.

hi friends, hope you’re having a wonderful day! a goal of mine is to read as many new releases as i could this year, and i’m actually succeeding in that. as of end-march, i’ve already ticked off 43 books from different genres and age ranges. i’m back with another ON MY RADAR segment for new 2021 releases from january to june. this time focusing mainly on may and june releases.

for most of these books, i only found out about it upon more research aka me scrolling through everyone else’s 2021 releases lists and stalking book announcements on Twitter. some of these didn’t have full information such as their covers and release dates so they weren’t added in the previous posts.

check out other blog posts of 2021 releases from january to june:
part 1: sequels of series i’ve started
part 2: fantasy standalone
part 3: new series
part 4: contemporary standalone + a little historical
part 5: more may and june releases

if anyone have the trigger and content warnings for any of the books mentioned below, please let me know. i would love to include them.

☟☟☟

arsenic and adobo (tita rose’s kitchen mystery #1) – mia p. manansala

age range: adult
genre: mystery, contemporary

i thought arsenic and adobo is young adult but it turns out to be an adult novel. been warned that i should not approach the book with an empty stomach. regardless, i’m ready for some delicious descriptions of filipino cuisines and experience the filipino culture through mia p. manansala’s mystery novel.

in arsenic and abodo, the victim is a food critic AND lila’s ex-boyfriend. when she’s the last one to be in contact with him, she’s treated as a suspect. needing to save tita rose’s restaurant, lila took things into her own hands and started her own investigation.

the dragon of jin-sayeng (chronicles of the bitch queen #3) – k.s. villoso

age range: adult
genre: fantasy

trigger and content warnings:
  • violence, threats of violence against women, murder, death, threats against children, mentions/threats of rape, animal cruelty, animal death, mention of miscarriage/abortion
  • taken from veronica’s blog @ moon & coffee

no words can ever describe my excitement for the finale of the chronicles of the bitch queen trilogy. queen talyien has everything going against her and more. what can she do when war is threatening to tear her already divided nation apart and when her son is stolen from her? based on the first two books, the wolf of oren-yaro and the ikessar falcon, book three will be epic.

♛ preorder

extraordinary (villains #0) – v.e. schwab

age range: adult
genre: fantasy

i haven’t read the villains duology yet but i’m highly anticipating v.e. schwab’s new storytelling format. i’m hoping i won’t have to read the novels before diving into this one. also, this is pretty low-key. i didn’t know about this until i did more research. the four-part comic is set between vicious and vengeful. issue 0 introduces charlotte tills who survived a bus crash gained an ability to witness someone’s death before it actually happens.

issue 1 is coming out on june 23!

♛ preorder

ophie’s ghosts – justina ireland

age range: middle grade
genre: historical fiction, paranormal

on the night she lost her home and father, ophie discovered she could see ghosts. as she befriends a ghost in the manor she’s working as a maid, more secrets of the place reveals itself. i’ve not read anything by justina ireland before though the dread nation duology has been on my mind for a while. regardless, i’m still excited for ophie’s ghosts. i need more middle grade in my life.

♛ preorder

the force of fire (a kingdom beyond #1) – sayantani dasgupta

age range: middle grade
genre: fantasy

found out the force of fire recently when i was scrolling through twitter. i’m looking forward to delving into indian culture and mythology, and bengali folklore. pinki looks absolutely badass on the cover. her fire breathing amazingness accidentally sets her school aflame. how can i not be anticipating this middle grade series?

♛ preorder

sister of the bollywood bride – nandini bajpai

age range: young adult
genre: contemporary, romance

with everyone in the family busy with their work, mini’s the only one left to plan her older sister’s bollywood-esque wedding that their mother would have if she were alive. time is of the essence but with a smoking hot distraction named vir and an incoming hurricane, many things might just go wrong. though i’m terrified of reading how the planning and wedding would be ruined, i need this book in my hands.

fifteen hundred miles from the sun – jonny garza villa

age range: young adult
genre: contemporary, romance, LGBT

trigger and content warnings:
  • physical parental abuse, anti-gay prejudice, anti-gay slurs, bullying, depiction of sex (not explicit), parental abandonment, death of parent (mentioned, in the past)
  • taken from cw’s goodreads

let me start off by thanking the ARC gods, i can’t wait to read fifteen hundred miles from the sun. my expectations are really high but i’m 100% for a soft romance between the main character and the love interest.

you just need to know one thing: mat from LA slides into julián’s DM. from the reviews that i’ve read, there are conversations about the struggles of queer latinx kids including a homophobic parent. what i gleamed from those reviews were that jonny garza villa discussed the serious topics with care and sensitivity.

♛ preorder

the marvelous – claire kann

age range: young adult
genre: contemporary, mystery, LGBT

since i’ve only read claire kann’s let’s talk about love, a contemporary romance, when i realised the marvelous will be a mystery novel, i was immediately intrigued with how the author would handle another genre.

though six teens are trapped in a mansion together to play a game, there are only three main perspectives: nicole, luna, and stella. lured there by an irresistible cash prize, secrets will be revealed while the characters searched for clues. mystery + game solving = bait for me. the game master, jewel van hanen, will be a mystery to unravel as well.

♛ preorder

of princes and promises (st. rosetta’s academy #2) – sandhya menon

age range: young adult
genre: contemporary, romance, retelling

of princes and promises is based on the retelling of the frog prince which i know nothing about except that the frog needed a kiss to transform back into a prince. honestly, any book sandhya menon is writing, i’ll be reading.

in the second instalment of st. rosetta academy, having pined over caterina for years, rahul finally have an opportunity to show that he isn’t just dorky person. with a pot of hair gel, that has the mysterious power of transforming his appearance to whatever he desires, comes blurry lines.

♛ preorder

the lady or the lion (the marghazar trials #1) – aamna qureshi

age range: young adult
genre: historical fiction, fantasy, retelling

this is a retelling of the lady or the tiger which i have zero idea what it’s about. set in a pakistan-inspired world, crown princess durkhanai miangul has to work with a foreigner, asfandyar afridi. investigating who is responsible for the attacks on neighboring leaders isn’t the only issue at hand. an illness is spreading in the village which is threatening the livelihood of her people. there will be court politics and a forbidden love.

apparently, this is going to be part of a series!! book two is a WIP which i’m already excited for.

♛ preorder

this poison heart (this poison heart #1) – kalynn bayron

age range: young adult
genre: fantasy, retelling, LGBT

first, the cover is freaking beautiful. second, drawing from the secret garden, this poison heart stars a Black main character who has an affinity with plant magic. add in an abandon mansion with strange visitors asking for an immortality elixir, briseis is thrown into danger.
