may and june: falling into the rabbit hole of webtoon | wrap up

Greetings! Been putting this off for a while. I’m afraid of making wrap ups too lengthy but since it’s basically what I’ve read for the past two months, it can’t be helped? For these two months, I read 21 books in May and 35 books in June. What this means for my Goodreads goal is that I’ve surpassed the 200 books read mark. Woohoo 🎉

There’s this whole conversation on Book Twitter about people who read insane amount of books in a single month that I might do a rant-y discussion post on. But that’s a whole other conversation of its own. I don’t know if I want to venture into that yet. I have a draft ready which is basically me word-vomiting my thoughts out. Whether it will ever see daylight is another question.

Overall, reading for these two months aren’t that bad even though I read below my usual numbers in May. As usual, most of the books are fantasy with the occasional contemporary and historical romances. No surprise there.

Hope you guys had a fantastic May and June!

may

Didn’t get to read as much as I wanted in May because I fell into the blackhole of Chinese webtoon/manhua animation on YouTube and wuxia/xianxia shows like Eternal Love. On top of that, I was busy with writing blog posts since I had planned to upload one content every day of the month of May.

Spent most of May reading Asian-authored books because it was Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. I had a blast. Reached out for books that weren’t on my TBR at all such as Empire of Sand by Tasha Suri, The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo and The Last Story of Mina Lee by Nancy Jooyoun Kim. If I were to choose a favorite read of the month, it would be No Paths are Bound by Moxiang Tongxiu. Over 900 pages long but I was never once bored, and because it’s part of the Heaven Official’s Blessing series.

ARCs read:
🏮 The Chosen and the Beautiful by Nghi Vo (June 1, 2021) ➙ retelling of The Great Gatsby with a queer, Asian protagonist. wasn’t familiar with the original story but so glad I’d read this version. loved Nghi Vo’s beautiful writing.
🏮 Sisters of the Snake by Sasha Nanua & Sarena Nanua (June 15, 2021) ➙ the Princess and the Pauper retelling of two sisters who realised they were twins separated at birth. one goes on a journey outside of her gilded cage while the other entered the palace after living in poverty for her entire life.
🏮 Gearbreakers by Zoe Hana Mikuta (June 29, 2021) ➙ MECHAAAAAAAAAAA SLAYING QUEER PROTAGONISTS! do i need to say more?
🏮 The Dragon of Jin-Sayeng by K.S. Villoso (May 4, 2021) ➙ K.S. Villoso made me feel something for Rayyel’s character that isn’t irritation. brilliant conclusion to this epic story featuring a queen who battled through every obstacle just to get back to her child.
🏮 The Other Side of Perfect by Mariko Turk (May 11, 2021) ➙ young ballerina’s dream was dashed when she suffered a horrible injury. alina is on a journey of self-recovery and self-acceptance.

    june

Reverted back to reading quite a bit in June despite starting work around the 3rd week. Historical Romance Readathon definitely got me sinking my hands into that genre. Was disappointed by Love and Other Natural Disasters by Misa Sugiura but not too bummed about it. Her books are kind of a hit-and-miss for me.

Unexpected favourites are The Marvelous by Claire Kann and The Kingdom of Back by Marie Lu. Never thought I would like these two when I initially started the book. Couldn’t stop reading them until I was done.

    ARCs read:
🏮 Fifteen Hundred Miles from the Sun by Jonny Garza Villa (June 8, 2021) ➙ long distance relationships are never fun. julián and mat were so cute together. filled with friendship and love amongst the pain and difficulties, this book has my heart.
🏮 The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri (June 8, 2021) ➙ epic adventure for multiple characters trying to fight their way to change the norm and save their kingdom.
🏮 Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim (July 6, 2021) ➙ absolutely adored this retelling of the Wild Swans featuring a sister who attempts to break the curse. Elizabeth Lim remains one of my favorite authors.
