july & august: reading more than just my set tbr | wrap up

Now that August is done and dusted, here is my wrap up post for the past two months! Sorry that this is so late, I’ve been feeling a little bit of a blogging slump recently. Intended to create posts that are outside the realm of reviews but could never really find the energy or the will to actually do it. Might have to pace myself a little throughout the week by drafting posts bit by bit. We shall see since things will be hectic at work these few weeks.

Just a quick statistics check: I read 37 books in July and 35 books in August! With it nearing the end of the year, I’m trying to clear the books off my year-long reading challenges and the 2021 releases that are on the top of my entire TBR. This might be an ambitious task but I think I’m able to succeed?

july

Finally finished the series of Heaven Official’s Blessing by Moxiang Tongxiu, and I’m even more obsessed with Xie Lian and Hua Cheng. Living for all the fan arts and the manhua now that I’m done consuming with all the different forms of media. Also, official English translations of all three MXTX’s works are coming out in the next two years. I’m already setting aside money so that I can get all of them. Help πŸ’ΈπŸ’ΈπŸ’Έ

ARC:
πŸ’ these hollow vows – lexi ryan: To free her sister from the fae king, Brie stepped into the world she hates and was on a mission to steal three artefacts. There she meets the Seelie prince who captured her attention from the start and an Unseelie rebel who she couldn’t stop thinking about.
πŸ’ like a love song – gabriela martins: Quick and romantic story of a Brazilian pop star and her fake boyfriend, a British indie film actor. Initially, Natalie thought this whole scheme wouldn’t work and wasn’t too kind to William because he didn’t fit into her expectations. To prove to the public that she’s over her ex-boyfriend, Natalie wanted someone who is easy on the eyes and charismatic. As they spent more time together fake dating, Natalie finds herself enjoying William’s company.

DNF:
πŸ’ the tiger’s wife – tΓ©a obreht: Unfortunately, I couldn’t get into the book at all. I think it’s just not something I want to read now, or maybe ever, and didn’t want so spend any more time forcing myself to finish it.

    august

As I’ve purposefully made my August TBR more manageable, the mood reader in me pushed to pick up books outside of the set list. With that said, I read more adult contemporary romances and adult historical romances on top of the fantasy books in this month.

    ARC:
πŸ’ iron widow by xiran jay zhao: AHHHH!!! This was fabulous. I had the best time reading Iron Widow!! The polyamory relationship that is slowly happening right in front of my eyes surpasses love triangles. Each character is unique on their own. Wu Zetian fears no one, Li Shimin looks scary but is actually a softie, and Gao Yizhi is sweet and supportive. China reimagined in a mecha world is pretty mind blowing too. I mean, thinking about huge moving objects roaming around the Great Wall of China is insanely awesome.
πŸ’ the hawthorne legacy by jennifer lynn barnes: One of my most anticipated releases of 2021, and I actually got an opportunity to read an early copy!! Eep!! As far as mystery with puzzles to solve and a huge mansion (and other rich people places) to explore, I loved it. However, I wasn’t too fond of the romance aspect mainly because I’m not particularly enjoy love triangles, especially when two of the three people involved are blood-related.

    DNF:
πŸ’ the bone season by samantha shannon: Although I DNF’d this book, don’t panic! I’m going to pick this up again in the upcoming months since I need to read it for my reading challenges. The whole sci-fi aspect totally threw me off when I expected this to be fantasy.
