Stalking Jack the Ripper was one of my favorite books of 2017. I didn’t know much about the story of Jack the Ripper other than he was a murderer whose identity was never found. The plot, the writing, the characters, and the setting of the book were fantastic. Kerri Maniscalco knows how to craft a beautiful book that balanced between romantic and mysteriousness.
“I was determined to be both pretty and fierce, as Mother had said I could be. Just because I was interested in a man’s job didn’t mean I had to give up being girly. Who defined those roles anyhow?”
First thing, Thomas Cresswell has got to be one of the most charming and attractive male characters I’ve ever read before. Shrouded in mystery and secrecy, his flirtatious manner with Audrey Rose is all I wanted. It seems like he was always waiting for the chance, a hint, that they should kiss. Also, Audrey Rose is simply amazing and sassy. Even though she was consistently exposed to death, dissected corpses, and chased after murderers, Audrey Rose is still ladylike. Audrey Rose is pursuing forensic medicine albeit society’s views about a female in that particular field. I loved that she was defying all odds. It’s fascinating to see 17-year-old Audrey Rose studying forensic medicine with such passion. From the moment Audrey Rose and Thomas met, I started rooting for them. Please don’t make me wait too long for them to be together officially.
I smiled. “Or, at the very least, until you perish and I’m tasked with dissecting your body to check for a heart.”
While following Audrey Rose’s stalking quest, I narrowed it down to two suspects. I’m not surprised by who the murderer is, but the whole thing was well-executed and I was holding my breath throughout the whole revelation. I adored the 1800s London setting, especially in the mystery genre.
“If you’d like to see me out of my breeches, simply ask, Wadsworth. I’m more than happy to accommodate you on that front.”

- not going to lie but my stomach churned every time i read about a dissection. there’s a reason why i don’t pursue being a doctor of any sort. but i found myself constantly fascinated at audrey for being so brave.
- i had an inkling that either her father or her brother was the Ripper. i was quite excited that i got it right but i was so upset when she broke down. it was so heart-wrenching to see her break down when she found out that her brother was the murderer wanted so desperately to bring their mother back Frankenstein style. and she couldn’t believe her caring and animal loving brother will rip apart birds and kill humans in such scary way. and she was supposed to be the one holding the knife, not her brother.
- Thomas has refused to let people see his tattoo for ages, no matter who had asked it. Once Alastair asked to see it, Thomas just rolled up his sleeves. WHY AM I SO HAPPY??????? ALASTAIR BULLIED THOMAS IN THE ACADEMY!!!! but they would be so cute together 🥺
- oh how can i not talk about the courtship from blackburn.. it was a spectacular fail. i don’t even remotely feel bad for that guy cause blackburn vs cresswell, i’m pretty sure audrey knows who’s right for her. he was acting so creepy from the start, my first impression of him totally went downhill and pshhh, nobody can win thomas. sorry not sorry.
- audrey’s father was adamant on keeping his daughter far far away from forensic medicine and everything that came with it because of his wife’s unfortunate death. but he changed so much at the end. he became supportive of her passion and even let her go to romania to study in a forensic medicines school with thomas.

Kerri Maniscalco’s writing painted a vivid picture of the gothic and scary castle that Dracula used to live in. She perfectly set the scenes so that you feel the same chills down your back and the same fear as the characters do. Everything was morbid yet enchanting. The cold, dreary setting of the Academy of Forensic Medicine and Science in Romania felt so real. It added to the sorrow of Audrey Rose after losing her brother in Stalking Jack the Ripper.
“The world is neither kind nor is it cruel. It simply exists. We have the ability to view it however we choose.”
Not only that, I’m absolutely in love with Audrey Rose and Thomas. Audrey Rose was unyielding, stubborn, and perceptive. She had a strong belief that she should be independent despite the expectations of society. She will not be manipulated or subdued to just being someone’s wife.
Thomas has a sweet mouth and a way with words. It was interesting to watch Thomas hide behind humor and laughter to defuse a situation or mask his true feelings when he was actually a vulnerable and sensitive young man. He made me swoon all the time when he said sweet nothings to Audrey, declaring his love and adoration.
Audrey Rose and Thomas were a wonderful pair and complemented each other so well. The two of them caught on to one another’s emotional state pretty quickly.
“Thank you for that reminder, Cresswell,” I said sweetly. “What would I do without you?” He turned to me, expression as serious as I’d ever witnessed it. “You would miss me terribly and know it. Just as I would miss you in ways I cannot fathom, should we ever part.”
Watching Audrey Rose go through the weeks after her brother’s death was horrible. It was heartbreakingly obvious that she hadn’t processed his death yet, and hadn’t properly grieved. More than that, she’s questioning if any Ripper murders could be prevented if they stopped the Ripper earlier. It must be a very traumatic time and I’m glad that Thomas was there for her. Although, she isn’t the kind of person who is super expressive.
The side characters were interesting too. Moldoveanu, the headmaster of the school, was strict with every student. He had no mercy and expected his students to be confident in their skills. The other students in the academy were a mixture of nice, genuine people and extremely cocky, mean people. Daciana and Ileana were the best because they seemed authentic human beings, and also, they were cheering for Thomas and Audrey Rose so that doesn’t hurt.
“Catch me if I fall, all right?”
A smile curved his lips in a most delightful manner. “I’ve already fallen hard, Wadsworth. Perhaps you should have warned me sooner.”
I couldn’t believe it took me ages to pick up Hunting Prince Dracula after reading the amazing Stalking Jack the Ripper. It made me excited for Escaping from Houdini but I’m not ready to end Audrey Rose and Thomas’s story with Capturing the Devil.

- half way through the book and my suspicions were on either ileana or anastasia. ileana seems a little too twitchy and hush hush about certain topics, and i don’t know if i could trust her, and she appeared so frequently in the book. i was confused when she stopped the conversation when audrey rose inquired about what tattoos nicolae have. i suspected anastasia because she was missing the entire time after she took the religious book from that dilapidated house. not that surprised anastasia was the murderer but i loved the way she was revealed FROM THAT BLOOD BATH TUB.
- WHAT KERRI MANSICALCO PLANTED THIS LITTLE SEED ALREADY?????!!!!! I’m talking about the letter liza sent to audrey rose about her flirting with a magician who performs with a traveling circus. ISN’T THAT THE SETTING OF THE NEXT BOOK???? ESCAPING FROM HOUDINI????????!!!!!! I literally gasped out loud when I made the connection.
- and thomas being an heir of dracula? i knew he had some secret since he kept trying to work up the courage to tell audrey rose about his mom during the journey to the academy but WHAT THE HECK???
- i really liked daciana and ileana’s romance. it’s sweet and i wanna know more about them! wasn’t very surprised when it was revealed the both of them were in the order of the dragon cause they’re really badass. ileana seemed much more intelligent even though she tried to hide it.

In Escaping From Houdini, Audrey Rose went into a deal with the magician. Of course, she ended up jeopardizing her relationship with Thomas and it broke me. Although I knew she was trying to uncover the truth, goodness, her wavering emotions just pained me. We all know that the magician had his own agenda and motives. Thomas’s tolerance was definitely tested.
A seriousness entered his eyes, making my heart flutter. “Our work will always be important to each of us. But you have my heart wholly, Wadsworth. No matter what. The only way that will be taken is in death. And even then I will fight with every piece of me to hold your love near. Now and forevermore.”
The setting of the book was magical, but being on a ship the entire time with nowhere to run or hide from a serial killer is terrifying. Kerri Maniscalco is talented in writing murder mysteries infused with romance. The murder sequence was executed nicely and smoothly. Compared to the first two books, the deaths and murders are much more gruesome and morbid. Every time they find a body, my stomach churned.
As of now, Escaping From Houdini might just be my least favorite out of the three books that are released. Mainly because I’m constantly bashing my head at how Audrey Rose is falling into the trap of the magician.
“If you can dream without limits, you can soar to great heights. Let the magic of your imagination set you free.”
Thomas and Audrey Rose’s mischievous and flirtatious banter is all that I’m living for. The two of them are perfect for each other, no matter who else is in the picture. Dear author, putting me through this love triangle was cruel. However, Kerri Maniscalco did it brilliantly and it tore my heart apart while Audrey Rose decided on what she wanted.
I’m sad that the Stalking Jack the Ripper series is coming to an end. I will miss Thomas and Audrey Rose. However, I’m also excited to read Kerri Maniscalco’s upcoming series, Kingdom of the Wicked, which is also in the historical fiction genre. All I desire now is to get my hands on the beautiful Capturing the Devil, and binge-read the entire book in one day.

I have no bones to pick about Audrey Rose and Thomas’s relationship. It’s beautiful and sweet, full of adventures and surprises. After what had happened in Hunting Prince Dracula, Audrey Rose and Thomas solidified their feelings for each other and are planning for a potential wedding. Little did they know, someone is up to no good.
“A mind is a powerful weapon, but it doesn’t have to be used wickedly,” I said. “That’s a choice.”
The way Thomas spoke to Audrey Rose with so much love and acceptance. I loved the times Thomas reminisced about the past with Audrey Rose. We only know things from her perspective but never from his, so reading his first impression of her and how he fell in love with Audrey Rose was simply very sweet. Another thing about Thomas, he’s incredibly supportive of whatever Audrey Rose wants to do even though the Victorian era rules dictated otherwise. These two defied tradition and worked towards being truly themselves. Audrey Rose adores Thomas. Her willingness to go to great lengths to make sure he’s fine and happy. She’s tuned to Thomas’s emotions like how he is sensitive to hers. She knew his method of deciphering situations and understood his mindset.
“I love you, Thomas Cresswell.” I kissed him gently. “With my whole heart.”
“Beyond life. Beyond death”–he nuzzled my neck, whispering–” my love for thee is eternal.”
When I read Capturing the Devil, I wasn’t expecting future events to come back into play and have a bigger plot. Having read the entire series, I can’t help but be in awe of how Kerri Maniscalco deliberately laid clues along the way. She tied the four books together nicely. Kerri Maniscalco always described the gorgeous settings wonderfully and hints at the darkness that lurked behind the scenes. There’s always a balance between good and evil, light and dark.
Honestly, I’m just in love and sad that this series is over. Stalking Jack the Ripper series will always remain a beloved one because of the lovely characters and because it quenches my need for some murder mysteries with forensic science. I’m going to miss exploring the world with Audrey Rose and Thomas. Their hilarious comebacks and heartwarming banter will be missed.

- the ending of capturing the devil reflected so much of the ending of stalking jack the ripper. it’s such a emotional burden to find out that nathaniel is jack the ripper and then such an emotional relief to realise that he was never personally or that deeper entrenched in those abysmal murders. audrey rose going through the entire ordeal herself (like the one where she found out about nathaniel’s secret working space) with her waking up to a half-skinned corpse of yet another victim of jack the ripper in that insane underground lab of the actual jack the ripper showed the parallels.
- audrey rose never fails to impress. she had been going on and on about how she would let jack the ripper die or she herself dealing the blows so that ‘henry’ would die. but, she didn’t do it in the end. instead of jamming that femur to lock that door so that henry would just die of being absolutely encompassed in fire, she opened the door and let him out. despite what henry had taunted her just few minutes ago, she let her humanity take over rather than her desire to let henry die by incineration. she fought and defeated the ‘devil’ that thirsted for blood in her. i love her even more for that. she’s so strong but i hope she gets some serious therapy after witnessing all the gruesome and horrifying scenes in that underground torture lab.
- GRANDMAMA USED HER INFLUENCE AND FRIENDSHIP WITH THE QUEEN TO REQUEST HER BLESSING ON THOMAS AND AUDREY ROSE’S ENGAGEMENT!!! HOLY FUCK GRANDMAMA, YOU’RE A BADASS
